Progression of Alcoholism
The progression of alcoholism, if you believe it is a disease, is
inevitable.
Both Jellinek's phasesof alcoholism and the
stages of alcoholism from "Under the Influence" show the
alcoholic as getting worse and worse
until they either stop drinking or die.
Jellinek's research of alcoholism outlines four phases of
alcoholism and five species of
alcoholism. Not all of the species
necessarily being based on the disease model of
alcoholism. Some were believed
to be more psychological in nature and others were simply physiological or disease based. The
stages of
alcoholism are outlined in Under the Influence a book by Dr. James A.
Milam and Katherine Ketcham. It definitely follows the disease model. As do
the stagesof recovery. There are four stagesof recovery and it is
important to know where you are at in these
stages. It can be useful in relapse prevention.
