Nutrition for Alcoholism
Nutrition for alcoholics is vital. Good nutrition is important for everyone but, bodies that have been ravaged by alcohol really need a healthy diet. A healthy diet cannot only be a big help in overcoming immediate problems like cravings and fluctuations in blood sugar levels. It can also help alleviate some of the damage done to our bodies by long term alcohol abuse.
The drunks body is used to getting its carbohydrates and
sugars the easy way. Through alcohol. Sugar levels
shoot up and then crash. The recovering addict needs to
switch to complex carbohydrates, whole grains and cereals,
which will give them a steadier supply of sugar to use.
One of the most successful diets is the macrobiotic
diet. It is from the Orient and is about balancing yin
and yang. Whether you care about balance or not this is a
good diet. West and East both agree that a good diet is
very helpful during recovery. Here is a brief breakdown
of the diet:
50% to 60% Whole grains. Oats, corn, brown
rice, wheat, rye, etc.
25% to 30% Fresh Vegetables.
Especially dark green leafy vegetables and dark yellow
vegetables.
5% to 10% Beans and Soy Products.
5% to 10% Soups. Bean soup would
probably go good here.
