Inpatient Alcoholism Treatment
<<>>
Inpatient alcoholism treatment, in my opinion, should be for the alcoholic who just can't stop drinking at all or for the wealthy. If you can afford the Betty Ford clinic it isn't going to be bad. If you can't afford that you will detox with the rest of the drunks. My HMO sends people to the county for detox. The community detox center is not a pretty place. It resembles a jail far more than it does a medical facility. It has everything from working class folks to felons in it. Personal hygiene is not a priority for many people in detox.
In detox they will probably give you sedatives to control the shaking. Most likely ativan, a benzodiazepine. They will probably fill you full of vitamins as well. That's why it's inpatient treatment. So they can dope you up. Both the vitamins and the benzos (sedatives)will make your detox easier and safer. They will also make you go to group therapy. In our detox you have to go to the groups or they can kick you out.
Many people don't know this but, detoxing from alcohol can kill you. As far as I know, alcohol is the only drug that withdrawing from can be lethal. Certainly withdrawal from any drug may make you wish you were dead but, alcohol can literally do it.
You'll spend 3 to 5 days in this living hell. Then it's into the general population. This is more like a nursing home than a jail. It's much better than detox. Some will allow you to smoke cigarettes others will not. Some won't even serve coffee with caffeine in it. Although they don't advertise this.
Here too, you have to go to the group activities or they will throw you out. They can get rid of you like this because there is a long list of people waiting to get in. If, however, you have turned yourself in voluntarily, rather than being ordered to rehab by the court, you get a little more freedom. They don't have anything to hold over your head.
