Individual Alcoholism Counseling
Individual alcoholism counseling isn't rare but, it is not the norm. A lot of times people do this when they think their drinking is a symptom of something else. The person is sure that they must fix one in order to fix the other.
One on one therapy is a very private way to take a look at yourself. With me it was used in conjunction with self help groups.
Ask the therapist you choose about their experience with treating problem drinkers. They should have a lot if that is the only problem you are trying to address. If you have an additional problem it would be better if they had experience with both types of problem.
There are board certified addiction pyschiatrists. There a counselors with Master's Degrees who specialize in addictions. The APA (American Psychological Association) has a public education information phone number for referral to state pyschological associations that can provide you with names and phone numbers for the kind of pyschologist you are looking for.
