Alternative Alcoholism Treatments

Alternative alcoholism treatments are rarely used by themselves.  Normally they are used in conjunction with other, more accepted forms of treatment. So they might be thought of as complimentary rather than alternative.

The first, the one everybody agrees is helpful, is nutrition. This includes eating right and supplements. Virtually everyone from problem drinkers to the those in the last stage of alcoholism suffer from varying degrees of malnutrition. 

The second is Easten.  It's more of group of therapies.  It's effectiveness is more controversial.  It includes acupuncture, herbs, and meditation. I know people who use this.  They say it helps them.  Many put this help in the pyschological category but, nobody seems to think it is dangerous.  As long as it is a supplemental therapy.

The third is  medication.  Not new drug to get us intoxicated but, drugs to help us safely detox.  Many people don't know this but, it is possible to die from alcohol withdrawal.  These drugs will also help control the shaking and other symptoms of detoxing. 

The fourth is Harm Reduction. That isn't considered treatment by many in the treatment field because it doesn't mean a person must stop using. It means that using is made to be as harmless as possible.
